Real-time simulation and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing are being adopted by an increasing number of forward-thinking utilities, manufacturers, research institutions, and consultants in the power industry. HIL testing equips these innovators to connect power system control and protection equipment to a simulated network, subjecting devices to comprehensive testing in the safety of a laboratory environment prior to deployment. Through the energy transition, which brings an increasing penetration of inverter-based resources and smart grid technologies, the ability to de-risk new systems and the interoperation of many complex devices is more valuable than ever before. This presentation and demonstration will provide power system professionals with a thorough introduction to real-time simulation and HIL testing. The presentation will cover fundamentals of electromagnetic transient (EMT) simulation, real-time simulation hardware and software, various applications of this technology, and real-world project examples. Participants will have the opportunity to watch a demonstration with the RTDS Simulator and RSCAD FX software, and a discussion with RTDS Technologies experts will follow.
