Model Monday: GTNET-COMTRADE Playback

COMTRADE represents a common format for transient data exchanged in the power system industry. Developed by the IEEE Power System Relaying Committee, the COMTRADE format is becoming increasingly important in the field of protective relay testing and study.

The RTDS Simulator can be used to playback captured COMTRADE waveforms. In comparison to the other COMTRADE models, the GTNET COMTRADE playback facility allows much larger files to be replayed by employing a GTNET peripheral with GTNET_PLAYBACK firmware and a Windows PC based file server.

The RTDS Simulator GTNETCOMTRADE playback facility is concerned only with the two mandatory files, that is, the configuration file and the data file. These two files must exist in the user’s RSCAD working directory whenever the playback facility is utilized. The GTNET COMTRADE component supports COMTRADE “.dat” files in ASCII or BINARY format.
