What to Expect

This advanced course is intended for individuals familiar with the RTDS® Simulator hardware and software!

This course covers the use of the RTDS® Simulator for modelling renewable energy resources and microgrid systems. Renewable energy applications such as modelling wind, photovoltaic energy (PV), energy storage, and microgrid systems will be covered as well as the detailed modelling of the power electronics and control systems for these systems.

The RTDS  Simulator’s sub-step environment is necessary when representing the power electronic circuits with high switching frequencies. These circuits operate with time-steps in the range of 1-4µs, and can be interfaced to large scale simulations operating with time-steps on the order of 50µs.

The Following Topics & Applications will be discussed:

  • Introduction to Substep modelling theory
  • Introduction to Substep library components
  • Modelling PWM-based Control Systems
  • Modelling Wind Power and Drive Systems
  • Modelling Photovolatic (Solar) and Energy Storage Systems
  • Modelling Microgrids
  • Average Value Models for Power Electronic Converters
  • Hardware-in-the-loop Applications
