With higher level of power electronic penetration into power grids, the need for simulating power electronic system in real time is growing. The RTDS Simulator’s subnetwork smaller time step facility are necessary when representing the power electronic circuits (2-level, 3-level and MMC based) with high frequency switching. The small time step and substep facility operate with time-steps in the range of several µs, and can be interfaced to main scale simulations operating with time-steps on the order of 20-50 µs.
Additionally, the simulation facilities GTFPGA-GPES has been developed to increase the power electronic modelling capabilities of the simulator. This one week training course will offer the necessary knowledge and experience for the purpose of utilizing these capabilities. Power electronic applications such as HVDC (VSC and MMC), FACTS and renewable energy system will be discussed and explained.
