Simulation Specialist
Technical Support

The Opportunity

The Simulation Specialist/Engineer will participate in the development and documentation of example cases of power system simulation cases and new component model development for the RTDS Simulator.  A Simulation Specialist is also responsible for providing simulation training & support to RTDS customers.

As a Simulation Specialist, you will be expected to

  • Develop and document example cases of power system simulation cases.  This will require keeping up to date with the latest technologies and techniques being applied in today’s modern power systems
  • Provide simulation support to RTDS customers (by email and/or telephone)
  • Participate as an instructor for training courses held at RTDS Technologies office
  • Participate in installation and commissioning of RTDS simulators at customer sites and provide instruction on its operation
  • Develop new basic controls and component models for the RTDS simulator
  • Test new RTDS software functions and features as they are developed and implemented
  • Other duties as may be assigned

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering with a power systems focus
  • Understanding of power systems/power electronics is required
  • Experience with programs such as PSCAD, RSCAD, MATLAB, preferred
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Simulation Specialist
R&D

The Opportunity

Under the guidance of the R&D Supervisor, the Simulation Specialist/Engineer will participate in the development of complex models, including power system library components and simulation tools, testing, analysis, and support of a complex or specialized area. The Simulation Specialist/Engineer will collaborate with and provide assistance to others in the development team on a continuous basis.

As a Simulation Specialist, you will work on…

  1. Technical Development
    • Develop complex models, including power system library components and simulation tools, testing, analysis, and support of a complex or specialized area.
    • Develop, evaluate, analyze, and implement mathematical control algorithms, coded into RTDS software, to solve complex power systems, power electronics, or FPGA siulation cases.
    • Code work using programming languages like C, C++, Java, Python, etc.
    • Develop and document example cases of complex power system, power electronics, or FPGA simulation cases. This will require keeping up to date with the latest technologies and techniques being applied in today’s modern power systems.
  2. Field Expertise
    • Participate in industry trade shows, international conferences, and professional working groups.
    • Write and present published results in technical journals and conference proceedings.
    • Lead installation and comissioning of RTDS Simulators at customers sites and provide instruction on its operation.
  3. Support Function
    • Provide simulation support to RTDS customers (by email and/or telephone) within area of expertise.
    • Test new RTDS software functions and features, with particular emphasis on power system and power electronics models, as they are developed and implemented.
    • Other duties may be assigned.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, experiences with EMT modelling or Ph.D. degree preferred.
  • Deep understanding of electric power system or power electronics theory or FPGA simulation and development is strongly preferred. Higher qualification with immediate opportunity for advancement.
  • Minimum 5-10 years’ experience in power systems/power electronics (graduated study or post-doctoral research experience in EMT simulation related area included).
  • Experience in EMT development, strong publication record in EMT modelling and simulation & experience in leading the development of large power system analysis software is considered an asset.
  • Deep experience with transmission line theory is strongly preferred. Higher qualification with immediate opportunity for advancement.
  • Experience with programs such as PSCAD, RSCAD, MATLAB, PSS/E is preferred.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Must be proficient and have experience in C or C++ programming languages.
  • Ability to travel (up to 25% of work time)
  • Must have Canadian full-time work permit.

Software Developer

The Opportunity

The Software Team at RTDS Technologies Inc. is responsible for creating, maintaining, and enhancing the RSCAD® Software suite that customers use for designing, running, and analyzing their simulation studies. To keep up with growing customer requirements, the team is re-designing significant portions of the RTDS Software. We’re looking for a Software Developer to join the team and participate in the development of the new product!

As a Software Developer, you’ll be expected to participate in the product design, including designing and coding new applications, features, and enhancements, while contributing and adhering to patterns and processes. You’re also expected to keep current with relevant technologies, and contribute to product and technical documentation.

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience.
  • At least 1-year of industry experience as a Software Developer/Programmer.
  • Experience programming in Java (preferred) or other object-oriented programming languages.
  • Experience developing GUI applications using JavaFX will be a bonus.
  • Excellent problem-solving, debugging, communication, and team-working skills.
  • Excellent knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms, as well as design patterns.
  • Knowledge of the full lifecycle of software development with Agile development practices.
  • Experience with software development tools like Git, Wrike, Eclipse, or other IDE’s
  • Technical curiosity is an important skill required to succeed in this role.

Senior Software Developer

The Opportunity

The Software Team at RTDS Technologies Inc. is responsible for the development of the RSCAD® software suite that customers across the globe use for designing, running, and analyzing their simulation studies. The suite consists of software modules that use various technology stacks, so there is always something new and exciting to work on!

You’ll work closely with the Business Analyst to design and develop situations that address the current market needs and enhance user satisfaction. You’ll also be responsible for taking on independent projects and work towards their completion, including mentoring junior developers to help them improve their skills via code reviews, etc.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or equivalent.
  • 4+ years of industry level work as a Software Develop or equivalent work experience.
  • Experience programming in Java (preferred) or other object-oriented programming languages.
  • Experience developing GUI applications using JavaFX is preferred, but not a requirement.
  • Experience with software development and debug tools like IDE, version control, project management tools, CI/CD, etc.
  • Excellent knowledge of Computer Science fundamentals in object-oriented design, data structures & algorithms, and design patterns.
  • Technical curiosity is an important skill required to succeed in this role.

Simulation Engineer

The Opportunity

The Simulation Engineer in the Applications Group is expected to become a domain expert for simulation, testing, analysis, and support in the area of renewables, power electronics, and grid forming technologies. The candidate will be expected to participate in training and support related to their area of expertise.

As a Simulation Engineer, you will be expected to develop expertise in the focus application within power system, and related RTDS Technologies products—including both hardware and software. You will develop and document example cases of simulation cases related to application. This will require keeping up to date with the latest technologies and techniques being applied in today’s modern power systems.

You will be an integral part of development & documentation of training modules, application notes, and online tutorials. You will provide simulation support to RTDS Technologies customers, either via email or phone. On top of all of this, you’ll also participate as an instructor for training courses held at the RTDS Technologies office and installation and commissioning of RTDS® Simulators at customer sites to provide instruction on its operation. Lastly, you will be expected to test new RTDS software functions and features as they are developed and implemented.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering with a Power Systems focus.
  • Understanding of power systems/power electronics is required.
  • Experience with programs such as PSCAD, RSCAD®, and/or MATLAB is preferred

Marketing Communications Specialist

The Opportunity

We’re looking for a unique Marketing Communications professional who is not afraid to get a little technical!!  You will join our Marketing team and participate in all marketing, communications and public relations activities to ensure consistent and engaging messaging about RTDS and our products. With guidance from an engineer in the Technical Marketing Lead role, you will distill technical information – product developments and user success stories, for example – into compelling messaging and marketing materials.

Collaboration is KEY in this role!  You will collaborate with our marketing, sales and technical staff in developing content for marketing collateral, PR/corporate communications, and digital marketing including RTDS’ website & social media (LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter).  This will involve a combination of copywriting, creating and managing visual assets (photos, videos etc.), and basic graphic design work. 

Qualifications:

  • Diploma/Certification in Marketing, Communications, Public Relations or related field
  • 2 years of experience in a marketing and communications role, including content development, executing integrated strategic marketing plans, and digital marketing responsibility (web, social media etc.).
  • Must have hands-on experience with Adobe suite (InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator).
  • Basic photography, videography experience is required.
  • Exceptional communication skills, including both writing and public speaking.
  • Strong understanding of communications best practices and strategies.
  • Highly organized and detail oriented with the ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects to meet deadlines.

Embedded Systems Software Engineer

The Opportunity

RTDS is seeking to fill an Embedded Systems Software Engineer in the Protection and Automation group (P&A).  The successful candidate will participate in the design, coding, testing and documentation of real−time embedded software for new and existing products designed for power systems communication protocols that will be incorporated into the RTDS real-time Power Systems Simulator.

Responsibilities:

  • Work closely with the engineering development team tasked with development of embedded software for substation automation protocols.
  • Participate in the design, coding, testing and documentation of real−time embedded software for new and existing products designed for power systems communication protocols.
  • Provide domain expertise with the functionality of new and existing embedded firmware and FPGA fabric for products in the RTDS Simulator.
  • Perform SOC and/or FPGA design and verification.
  • Combine custom logic, generate IP cores and hard IP blocks to meet design requirements.
  • Support system integration and verification.
  • Support and enhance P&A designs already in production.
  • Follow and develop quality assurance and quality control procedures/scripts for P&A related products.

Qualifications (Required):

  • Minimum Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering, or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to follow development schedules and work as a member of a multi-disciplined development team.
  • Excellent communications skills both with written word and speech in English, a second language will be considered an asset.
  • Experience working with C-based software in a real-time operating system (RTOS) such as VxWorks or QNX.
  • Understanding of Networks, Switches, VLANs, Firewalls, etc.
  • Experience with packet sniffing tools such as Wireshark.
  • Experience with maintaining and releasing of software and firmware in a production environment using CVS or other versioning tools.
  • Experience with all phases of the FPGA development process (coding, simulation, implementation, verification, debug).
  • Knowledge of digital logic design principles and FPGA and SOC architectures.
  • Experience using VHDL.
  • Experience using the Vivado FPGA development tools from Xilinx.
  • Experience with embedded SOC.
  • Must be willing to relocate to Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Qualifications (Assets):

  • Experience with Xilinx Multi-gigabit transceivers.
  • Experience with connectivity protocols such as Ethernet, TCP/IP, I2C/SPI, UART and others.
  • Experience with time synchronization protocols such as IEEE 1588 PTP, NTP, and IRIG-B.
  • Experience with Power System protocols such as (IEC 61850, DNP, 104, PMU, Modbus).
