The Center for Advanced Power Systems (CAPS) located at the Florida State University (FSU) first bought a 4-rack RTDS Simulator in 2002. Over the years the system was expanded and currently consists of 14 racks. The original simulator used 3PC and RPC processor cards as well as WIF and IRC communication cards. However in 2009 CAPS began the systematic upgrade of the simulator to use only GPC processor cards and to replace the WIF and IRC cards with new GTWIF cards. The upgrade is a significant investment and is being done in stages. With the latest upgrade project for 5 racks, more than half of the system has been converted to the state of the art in RTDS Simulator technology. The upgrade projects demonstrate the commitment at CAPS-FSU to the RTDS Simulator and the important role it plays in their activities.
